Research in Asian Architecture
Reflection
When first doing this final project, I was not able to understand the project tasks which panicked me but with the help of my groupmates, I slowly understand the tasks and tried to involved in the discussion to complete the allocated tasks. I volunteered to do research on the second research question "what sort of effect does the cultural identity of a site have on how the building will be re-used?" I completed the task with my best with the clarity explained by my groupmates. Throughout this research, I understand that it is really important to perverse the cultural identity of a site when reusing an abandoned building. The best way to adaptive reuse a building is to take into account the site context and cultural identity. In my opinion, adaptive reuse not only means that to reuse a building without a purpose but to reuse a building with an idea of how it attracts both the locals and tourists and how it blends with the local context yet is still outstanding.
Adaptive re-use of traditional architecture
Among the given directions, my group had decided to focus on adaptive re-use of traditional architecture, focusing on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee and we had come out with the topic "Renovating heritage buildings whilst preserving and respecting cultural identity: A case study of Jalan Tun H.S. Lee". Our focal point is on how the re-use buildings give respond to the cultural identity of the site. Conservating the existing architectural facades whilst not losing their meanings. We have come out with 4 research questions and these 4 questions will guide us to find out the answer to a good way of reusing buildings without losing the site cultural identity.
This video presents renovating heritage buildings whilst preserving and respecting the cultural identity and used Jalan Tun H.S. Lee as a case study.
